Envision partners with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada to develop air pollution control
Guelph, Ont., Canada, July 1, 2018 — A research collaboration between Envision SQ (“Envision”) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (“TMMC”) will adapt Envision’s innovative air pollution control technology to help further reduce emissions at Toyota automobile manufacturing plants in Ontario.
Envision is working with Toyota engineers on research and development projects aimed at reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in factory emissions. The collaboration will provide a critical test for adapting Envision’s air-filtration technology for new uses in an industrial setting, said Scott Shayko, Envision President and CEO.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to take what we’ve learned in creating the SmogStop™ Barrier and SmogStop™ Filter and apply it to designing something completely new,” said Shayko. “Toyota is a world leader in promoting sustainability in the auto sector. Our ultimate goal is to develop new technologies that provide manufacturers with affordable, effective solutions to help reduce their impact on the environment.”
SmogStop™ Barrier is a highway sound barrier that also reduces air pollution along transportation corridors by capturing NOx and VOCs in fuel exhaust and reducing them to harmless gases. SmogStop™ Filter adapts the same photocatalytic technology for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in residential and commercial properties.
The Toyota project will start at TMMC’s Cambridge, Ont. plant and, if successful, may be expanded to the company’s Woodstock facility. The projects will focus on redeveloping Envision’s innovative solutions to reducing NOx and VOC emissions for industrial applications.
The collaboration is a natural fit with the Toyota 2050 Environmental Challenge, a multifaceted initiative that aims to take the company “beyond zero” environmental impact and achieve a net positive impact.
“At Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) we have made a top priority of managing our environmental impact, and we believe this partnership with Envision to continue developing their innovative and cost-effective pollution control technologies will benefit both organizations,” said Bob Ruggieri, General Manager overseeing TMMC’s Energy Management team. “We hope to take what we learn here and apply it toward achieving Toyota’s global sustainability goals.”
